Behind the Scenes

The Story

Like any good landscape photography story, this one starts out in late hours of Feb 13th, 2018 on a little website called Reddit.

Six months previous, I packed up this little van and left my home town on journey across Canada. Along the way, my goal was to find and photograph the most beautiful locations this country had to offer.

I searched Instagram, Flickr (rip), Google Images, anywhere I could to find the most inspiring locations in Canada.

I was instantly taken back to this photo. The Canadian Rockies are FULL of incredible valleys, rivers, and mountains but a endless green field like this? Rare.

So I dove into the comments looking for a location. There were a ton of hints, lots of speculation, but the op would not share the original coordinates.

I immediately knew this was my mission. So I loaded up the old '87 Westy with Alpine (and Alf, there's sentimental value there don't tease) and headed for the hills...

Along the way, we encountered some pretty "interesting weather" but there's one thing about the Canadian Rockies is you never trust the forecast...

This wasn't encouraging...

Then finally, after dodging a few thunder clouds, a few dead ends, and a solid 3 mpg on the Westy, we found this...

Here's the moment where I tell the story of finding this image, scouting the location, and going back to this spot to try to see it with my own eyes...

and then how I felt in the moment...

These are the moments...

From seeing this image.

To researching the location.

To taking off on the adventure.

To finally finding the location.

To capturing my shot.

This is EXACTLY what made me fall in love with landscape photography.

The image I captured is one that I'm very proud of. I wanted to capture as much detail as possible of this incredible landscape.

I ended up shooting 12 images with a 135mm portrait lens (one of the sharpest lens ever made) and combined the images together into one panorama

Then finally, after a long day, Alpine and I climbed a nearby hill and relaxed and enjoyed the view.
